Are students and teachers allowed to copy or scan books and other copyrighted material?

Answer

You may never copy an entire book, even as a private individual. You may not copy recorded audio and video works. It is not permitted to copy or share published compulsory course literature with certain exceptions. Based on Swedish higher institutions’ agreement with Bonus Copyright Access, students and employees at LiU can copy or scan and share 15%, but not more than 15 pages of printed or digital material.

As a teacher, you can make so many copies that each student get one copy. You may only share and distribute the material digitally within a closed learning platform (e.g. Lisam) to which only teachers and students have access.

According to the agreement, teachers also have the right to make a paper copy of a book for their own use. It is not allowed to copy and save the book in digital format.
